- Efficacious IT managers will articulate a logistic goal such as “The school will create and maintain a robust and reliable network (including a wireless network) for students, faculty, and staff to access the LAN and Internet.”

- It is possible to “break” the network by disconnecting the wrong cable or turning off the wrong device in the wiring closet. To keep the network safe, the prudent IT professional will secure the closest and the devices it contains, but the prudent school administrator will understand how to gain access if necessary.

- Ethernet is the dominant type of network installed in schools; it uses cables (consisting of eight strands of copper wires and shielding to prevent electromagnetic fields from interfering with the signal) that connect to ports in computers, switches, and other devices with plastic clips that close circuits throughout the network.
