    Heat transfer is the movement of thermal energy from one object or area to another due to a difference in temperature. All thermographic inspections are based on the principle that temperature differences create measurable thermal patterns.

    Infrared thermography does not directly measure heat transfer. Instead, it detects infrared radiation emitted from surfaces, which is influenced by how heat is generated, stored, and transferred within a material or system. Understanding basic heat transfer concepts allows thermography technicians to recognize why certain thermal patterns appear and under what conditions they are most visible.
