    Solar loading is the heating of a surface caused by the absorption of solar radiation from the sun. When sunlight strikes a material, some of the energy is absorbed and converted into heat, raising the surface temperature independently of internal heat sources.

    Solar Loading in Thermography

    In thermography, solar loading can significantly affect surface temperatures and may create thermal patterns unrelated to internal conditions or defects. The degree of solar loading depends on factors such as time of day, sun angle, cloud cover, surface color, material properties, and exposure duration. Dark or absorptive materials typically experience greater solar loading than light-colored or reflective surfaces.

    Because solar loading affects surface temperature distribution, it must be recognized, managed, and documented during thermographic inspections. Failure to account for solar loading can lead to misleading thermal images or false indications.
