    Infrared cameras can produce several types of images. Understanding the differences between these image types is critical for proper documentation and downstream analysis.

    Radiometric Thermal Images

    Radiometric images store temperature data for every pixel in the image. This allows:

    • Post-processing
    • Temperature measurement after capture
    • Review by Level II or III personnel

    Radiometric images are the preferred format for most professional thermographic inspections.

    Level I Responsibility:
    Ensure radiometric capture mode is enabled when required by procedure.

    Non-Radiometric (Visualized) Images

    Non-radiometric images store only the visual representation of the thermal scene. They:

    • Do not contain temperature data
    • Cannot be re-analyzed for measurement

    These images may be used for training or general documentation but are typically insufficient for formal inspections.

    Visual (RGB) Images

    Many infrared cameras and drone payloads capture visual images alongside thermal data. Visual images help:

    • Identify components
    • Provide context
    • Correlate thermal patterns to physical features

    When required, visual images should be captured at the same time and from a similar viewpoint as thermal images
