    Understanding basic mechanical concepts helps explain why heat appears in mechanical systems.

    Friction and Heat Generation

    Friction occurs when two surfaces move against each other. Friction generates heat, which may be detected by infrared thermography.

    Examples include:

    • Bearings
    • Gears
    • Sliding surfaces
    • Couplings

    Load and Mechanical Stress

    Mechanical load refers to the forces acting on a component during operation.

    • Increased load generally increases heat generation
    • Uneven load distribution may create localized heating

    Speed and Motion

    Operating speed influences heat generation:

    • Higher speeds may increase friction
    • Changes in speed can create transient thermal conditions

    Level I technicians should note operating conditions during inspection.
