    Equipment is one of the most practical and consequential aspects of building a high-quality early childhood program. What you purchase (and how you manage it) shapes children’s daily experiences, staff workflow, health and safety, inclusion, and the program’s long-term budget. This chapter focuses on making equipment decisions systematically rather than reactively. Sections will address:

    • How to identify what’s needed for children’s indoor and outdoor environments, adult workspaces, and essential service areas,
    • How to select items using clear criteria grounded in development, accessibility, and safety,
    • How to plan purchases within real budget constraints,
    • How to navigate ordering processes and timelines, and
    • How to maintain equipment through organized inventory, storage, and routine upkeep.

    The goal is to help program leaders build an environment that is developmentally supportive, inclusive, efficient for staff, and financially sustainable over time, while minimizing waste and avoiding premature replacement costs.
