    8.1: Introduction to Carbon Steel Piping

    What is Carbon Steel?

         Carbon steel is a strong metal made from iron and carbon. It’s often used in HVAC systems because it can handle high pressure and heat. You’ll see it in heating systems, chilled water systems, and even gas lines.


     

    Why Use Carbon Steel Pipes?

    Advantages:

    • Strong and Long-Lasting: Carbon steel pipes don’t break easily, even under heavy use.
    • Affordable: They cost less than other materials like copper.
    • Versatile: You can use them for many things in HVAC systems, like heating, cooling, and gas lines.

    Limitations:

    • Rust: If not protected, carbon steel can rust when it gets wet.
    • Heavy: These pipes are heavier than plastic pipes, so they are harder to carry and install.
    • Needs Maintenance: To keep them working well, they need regular checks and cleaning.

     

    Where Are Carbon Steel Pipes Used in HVAC Systems?

    • Heating Systems: They carry hot water or steam to warm up a building.
    • Cooling Systems: They transport chilled water to cool the air.
    • Gas Lines: Carbon steel pipes are strong enough to safely carry natural gas.
