Over the last century, a number of companies have shaped tractor technology and global agriculture.A green and yellow agricultural tractor is working in a field, with tall grass and trees in the background.

John Deere of the United States is one of the oldest and best-known names in agriculture. Founded in the 1830s, the company has become synonymous with durable, high-performance tractors and continues to pioneer smart-farming technologies that integrate GPS automation and data analytics directly into the equipment.

    Fig. 1.3.1

A red Massey Ferguson tractor on a plowed field, with large tires and a cloudy sky in the background.

Massey Ferguson, a global brand operating under the AGCO Corporation, builds tractors known for reliability and ease of use on farms of every size. They are especially common across Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, where simple operation and rugged construction matter most.

    Fig. 1.3.2

Blue New Holland T9 tractor with large tracks on a plowed field, under a cloudy sky.

New Holland, part of CNH Industrial, bridges Italian and American engineering traditions. Its tractors range from compact models to the heavy-duty machines used on vast operations. The company emphasizes sustainability through cleaner engines and alternative fuels, making it a leader in eco-friendly farm equipment.

    Fig. 1.3.3

A red Case IH tractor with large tires, parked on a plowed field under a blue sky with clouds.

Case IH, also under the CNH umbrella, is recognized for powerful, technology-driven tractors favored on large North American farms. Their trademark red machines are often among the first to feature new precision-agriculture systems.

    Fig. 1.3.4

An orange Kubota tractor with large tires is parked on a brown, plowed field under a cloudy sky.

From Japan comes Kubota, a global leader in compact and mid-sized tractors. Reliable, fuel-efficient, and easy to maintain, Kubota tractors are beloved by small-farm operators, landscapers, and homeowners alike.

A green and black agricultural tractor with large, orange wheels parked on a field under a cloudy sky.

Germany contributes two major names: Claas and Fendt. Claas, famous for its harvesting equipment, also produces advanced tractors that focus on operator comfort and efficiency. Fendt—another AGCO brand—is regarded as a luxury line, offering premium performance, refined engineering, and the latest in automation and hydraulic control.

    Fig. 1.3.7

A red Mahindra tractor lifting a bucket of dirt on a farm field under partly cloudy skies.

India has emerged as a powerhouse as well. Mahindra is now the world’s largest tractor manufacturer by volume, known for affordable, rugged machines that thrive in tough conditions across Asia and Africa. Another Indian company, Sonalika, produces budget-friendly tractors designed for emerging markets, steadily expanding its global presence with efficient, easy-to-maintain models.

A blue Sonalika tractor parked on freshly plowed soil under a cloudy sky.

    Fig. 1.3.9

A modern Valtra tractor parked on freshly tilled soil, with an overcast sky and trees in the background at sunset.

From northern Europe comes Valtra, based in Finland and also part of AGCO. Valtra specializes in highly customizable tractors built to handle rough terrain and extreme climates. Their designs—popular across Scandinavia and Latin America—embody toughness and adaptability.

Together, these manufacturers represent the full spectrum of modern tractor technology: from compact and efficient machines for small farms to enormous autonomous units capable of operating around the clock. Each brand continues to push the limits of what a tractor can do, ensuring that this essential piece of agricultural machinery remains at the heart of feeding the world.
