For short-term rests—overnight or a few days—the goal is cleanliness and protection. Park on level ground, lower all implements, set the parking brake, and close fuel valves. Filling the tank minimizes condensation. A tarp or canopy shields against sun but should allow airflow so trapped moisture doesn’t breed corrosion.

Tires should rest on wooden blocks or slightly over-inflated to prevent flat spots, and the exhaust should be covered with a breathable cap to keep out moisture and nesting insects.
Inside storage is ideal—away from rain, wind, and sunlight—but even outdoors, simple habits make a difference. Positioning the tractor facing east reduces afternoon sun exposure on hydraulic hoses and seat vinyl. Rodent deterrents near wiring harnesses prevent expensive springtime surprises. A machine stored with forethought starts easily when needed; one forgotten through winter may spend its first day of spring in the shop instead of the field.
Long-term storage, then, is not a pause in responsibility—it is another form of maintenance. The machine that rests well works well.

For seasonal or off-season storage, operators should:
- Clean the tractor thoroughly—remove dirt, oil, plant debris, and corrosive residue
- Drain or stabilize fuel (especially for gasoline engines) to prevent varnishing or degradation
- Change engine oil and filter to prevent internal corrosion
- Grease all zerks, joints, and pivot points
- Inflate tires to recommended pressure or overinflate slightly to reduce flat-spot formation
- Disconnect or trickle-charge the battery to maintain a safe voltage
- Seal or cover the exhaust stack, air intakes, and other openings to deter rodents, insects, or moisture intrusion
- Store in a dry, covered, well-ventilated structure if possible
