Our paramedic program developed the most thorough discipline-specific AI policy, and it works as a model for other high-stakes CTE fields. The policy opens by naming what the program protects:

In this program we emphasize developing the critical thinking ability necessary for problem solving in emergency medicine. This includes the ability to assess patients, create differential diagnoses, and develop appropriate treatment plans under pressure, many times with incomplete information.

It separates permitted from prohibited uses with unusual specificity, because the cost of getting it wrong includes patient deaths.

    Permitted Uses

    • Concept clarification and background research: exploring foundational concepts before class, with all AI-generated medical information verified against approved textbooks and protocols.
    • Study aid and organization: study schedules, flashcards, and practice scenarios for self-study.
    • Writing assistance for non-assessed work.

    Prohibited Uses

    • Any graded assessment: written exams, patient care reports, case-study analyses, clinical reflections.
    • Clinical decision-making: using AI to determine assessment findings or treatment decisions during simulations or rotations.
    • Patient care documentation.

Sample Assignment: AI-Generated Content with Critical Verification

A pattern that works: students use AI to generate explanatory content, then systematically verify and correct it against authoritative sources. They choose an emergency medication, generate an explanation of its mechanism and effects, fact-check everything against the pharmacology text and protocols, write a one-page summary in their own words, and reflect on what the AI got right and wrong. The learning happens in the verification, and students discover that AI makes errors that could kill patients.
