Nursing programs feel the simulation challenge most sharply, because clinical placements are scarce, patients are vulnerable, and the required competencies are vast. A 2025 systematic review in Clinical Simulation in Nursing reported that AI-enhanced simulations improved communication, clinical reasoning, knowledge acquisition, self-efficacy, and empathy in nursing students.
Platforms like VRpatients offer web-based patient simulations that run on standard computers, not just VR headsets, which matters for students without headsets or reliable high-speed connections.
The Documentation Challenge
Nursing documentation is increasingly AI-assisted in practice, which creates a teaching dilemma. Should students learn the AI documentation tools they will meet professionally, or first show they can document without them? The answer is probably both, sequenced. Early on, students document without AI to build understanding of what documentation captures and why. Later, they learn the AI tools while keeping the critical eye to catch errors, because AI documentation errors can harm patients.
Sample Policy Language
AI tools may be used for concept clarification and study support. All AI-generated medical information must be verified against course textbooks and current clinical guidelines before being trusted. AI may not be used during patient interactions, for clinical documentation, or for any assessment that evaluates your ability to make clinical judgments independently. These restrictions exist because your future patients need you to be capable when technology fails.
