Universal Design for Learning emphasizes multiple means of engagement, representation, and action or expression. In rural contexts those principles get intensified by distance, variable broadband, and students’ work and caregiving responsibilities. AI does not replace UDL. It gives us more tools to implement it, and a new responsibility to ask who benefits and who might get left further behind.
Where AI Supports UDL
- Generating alternative explanations when the first approach does not click
- Producing plain-language versions of complex instructions
- Drafting captions, alt-text, or summaries that faculty then verify
- Offering on-demand tutoring when office hours are out of reach
- Providing varied practice problems tailored to different interests
- Helping students brainstorm different presentation formats
- Offering language support for multilingual students
Where AI Can Undermine UDL
- When core learning outcomes get outsourced to AI, students lose the chance to build that capacity
- When we assume everyone has reliable devices and broadband, AI-heavy assignments privilege more resourced students
- When AI-generated content is not vetted for bias, it can reinforce barriers rather than remove them
Design Principles
Start with the outcome, then decide where AI belongs. If the outcome is reading a disciplinary text, do not let AI carry the reading. If the outcome is clinical judgment, AI cannot shortcut the judgment.
Use AI to widen the on-ramps, not lower the bar. AI can help students reach the material. It should not reduce what they are expected to learn.
Always offer at least one low-tech path. Students who lack reliable access, or who prefer not to use AI, should still be able to complete assignments and show competence.
