Key Terms and Definitions
- Data Collection — Gathering raw data from sources and compiling it for initial use.
- Data Ingestion — Moving collected data into a storage/processing system for analysis.
- ETL — Extract, Transform, Load — data is transformed before loading into the target.
- ELT — Extract, Load, Transform — raw data is loaded first, then transformed in the target system.
- CDC — Change Data Capture — ingesting only new or modified records from a source.
- Batch Ingestion — Processing data in bulk at scheduled intervals (e.g., nightly).
- Streaming Ingestion — Continuously ingesting data in near real-time as it is generated.
- API — Application Programming Interface — a structured way for software to request and exchange data.
- Web Scraping — Programmatically extracting data from websites by parsing HTML content.
- Message Queue — An intermediary system (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ) that decouples data producers from consumers.
- Schema Evolution — Changes to data structure over time (new fields, type changes) that pipelines must handle.
- Lambda Architecture — A hybrid pattern combining a batch layer for completeness with a speed layer for real-time.
- Data Pipeline — An automated series of steps that move and transform data from source to destination.
- Micro-batching — Processing very small batches at high frequency to approximate real-time without full streaming complexity.
