Lab: Conducting EDA on a Real Dataset
Scenario:
You have a dataset of 5,000 restaurant dining records with: total_bill, tip, sex, smoker (yes/no), day, time (lunch/dinner), party_size.
Instructions:
-
Univariate Analysis (20 min): For total_bill and tip: compute summary stats (mean, median, std, IQR), create histograms, create box plots. Describe the distribution shape, identify outliers.
-
Bivariate Analysis (25 min): Create a scatter plot of total_bill vs tip. Compute Pearson correlation. Create grouped box plots of tip by smoker status and by day. Describe patterns discovered.
-
Multivariate (20 min): Create a scatter plot matrix for numeric variables, colored by smoker status. Create a correlation heatmap. Use faceting to examine tip vs bill by sex AND smoker status. What interactions emerge?
-
Outlier Investigation (15 min): Identify outliers using the 1.5×IQR rule for tip. Investigate: are these data errors or genuine? What would you do with them?
-
EDA Summary Report (10 min): Write a 1-page summary of your 3 most important findings, including what further analysis or modeling you'd recommend.
Deliverables:
Summary statistics tables, 6+ visualizations (annotated), outlier analysis, EDA summary report with recommendations.
