Hands-On Lab Exercise
Lab: Dashboard Design and Data Storytelling
Scenario:
CityHealth is a public health agency. You have a dataset: disease_type, reported_cases, deaths, county, date, age_group, vaccination_rate, hospital_capacity_pct.
Instructions:
-
Dashboard Layout (25 min): Design a dashboard for CityHealth's director showing: disease surveillance overview, geographic hotspots, trends over time, hospital capacity status, and vaccination progress. Sketch the layout with specific chart types for each section. Apply visual hierarchy — what's most prominent?
-
Advanced Chart Selection (15 min): For each scenario, choose the best advanced chart type and justify: (a) Showing how total cases split across age groups and then by disease type (hierarchy). (b) Comparing hospital performance across 6 metrics. (c) Tracing patient flow from ER admission through diagnosis, treatment, and discharge/death.
-
Interactive Features (15 min): Specify what interactive features your dashboard needs: which filters, what drill-down paths, where cross-filtering applies, and what tooltips show. Apply Shneiderman's mantra.
-
Real-Time Considerations (15 min): The director wants real-time updates during a disease outbreak. What changes to dashboard design, data pipeline, and performance optimization are needed?
-
Data Story Presentation (20 min): Write a 5-slide outline for presenting this dashboard's key findings to the City Council (non-technical audience). Structure: setup/context → key finding #1 → key finding #2 → implications → recommended actions.
Deliverables:
Dashboard layout sketch with chart types, advanced chart selection justifications, interactive feature specification, real-time design document, 5-slide story outline.
