Hands-On Lab Exercise
Lab: Designing a BI Solution
Scenario:
RetailMax has sales data in an OLTP database, inventory data in spreadsheets, and customer feedback in a CRM. The VP wants a weekly sales performance dashboard.
Instructions:
-
Architecture Design (20 min): Design a 3-tier BI architecture for RetailMax. Specify: data sources, ETL process, warehouse schema (star schema with at least one fact table and three dimension tables), and front-end tool.
-
Star Schema (25 min): Design a star schema for retail sales analysis. Draw the fact table (sales_fact) with measures (revenue, units_sold, discount_amount) and dimension tables (time_dim, product_dim, store_dim, customer_dim) with their key attributes.
-
OLAP Queries (15 min): Write 5 analytical SQL queries against your star schema: (a) total revenue by product category and quarter, (b) top 10 stores by units sold, (c) year-over-year revenue comparison, (d) average discount by customer segment, (e) revenue trend by month for the last 2 years.
-
Dashboard Design (20 min): Design the VP's weekly dashboard. Include: 3-4 KPIs at the top, 3-4 charts (specify types), filters (time period, region, product category), and layout sketch.
-
OLTP vs OLAP Comparison (10 min): Using RetailMax as context, write one example OLTP query and one OLAP query. Explain why each is suited to its respective system.
Deliverables:
Architecture diagram, star schema diagram, 5 SQL queries, dashboard design sketch, OLTP/OLAP comparison.
