Thus enters the role of the expert forensic witness. First, as we have discussed, the expert forensic witness must be first qualified by the trier of fact to provide testimony. This qualification will be based on the demonstrable training, experience, and accomplishments of the witness, and the ability of the witness to assist the trier of fact to understand the significance of facts in question. Second, the expert witness must have an understanding of the science behind the methodology that was used, and that the methodology was accomplished in a manner that was objective and without bias. Third, the expert witness must provide written documentation of what process was used, what was done, how it was done, and how the conclusions were reached. Finally, the expert witness must be of the highest moral character and ethical integrity.
Your author is often approached by students who have an interest in pursuing a career in the forensic sciences, but believe they are far too shy to present testimony in court before a jury and audience. As with everything, comfort comes with experience, and the more one testifies, the easier it gets. Your author was once a shy young man. He got over this timidity by attending a college speech class and by joining a theatrical group and performing in college musicals. Embrace the challenge and you will overcome the fear that goes with shyness. It helps to have the ability to laugh at yourself. Your author does a lot of laughing.
