Nehemiah Grew was a 17th century English botanist and microscopist who studied the structure of ridges in the epidermis and dermis of the hands and feet using a microscope. He made accurate drawings of these ridges, furrows, and pores, which he published in 1684. Nehemiah Grew was aware of the uniqueness of these ridged surfaces, which could be used for identification purposes, which makes him one of the founding fathers of dactyloscopy or the science of using fingerprints as a means of identification.
