Italian physician and biologist Marcello Malphigi, and the founder of the science of microscopic anatomy, also conducted microscopic examinations of ridges, furrows, and pores in human skin during the 17th century. Dr. Malphigi was the first to discover that common patterns existed in human fingerprints. These patterns were loops, whorls, and arches, which he suggested would be useful in identification.
