Will West responded that it was his first time in prison. The clerk finished the measurements but believed that he had collected the same measurements for a person with the same name before and believed that Will West was not being truthful about his incarceration. Thus, the clerk consulted the Bertillon system filing cards where he found the near identical measurements having been recorded for William West, an inmate who had left the prison in 1901. When challenged by the clerk, Will West stated, “That’s my picture, but I don’t know where you got it, for I know I have never been here before.”
When the discrepancy was pointed out to the Warden, M.W. McClaughry, he is known to have said, “This is the death of the Bertillon system,” and the very next day he signed an order replacing the anthropometric system with a system based on fingerprints. By 1905, fingerprints surpassed the Bertillon System as the king of identification.
