There must be only one delta, and at least one ridge between the delta and the core of the print. To understand the delta, you must first understand the pattern area and type-lines.
The pattern area is that part of a loop or whorl in which appear the cores, deltas, and ridges.

Type lines are the two innermost ridges, which start parallel, diverge, and surround (or tend to surround) the pattern area. The delta is that point on a ridge at or in front of and nearest the center of the divergence of the type lines. Think of the delta as that sand bar that is usually found where a river flows out to a larger body of water. The three ridges that you will see surrounding the pattern area and the delta are called the tri-radius.
The core is the approximate center of the fingerprint impression. The ridge count is the number of ridges intervening between the delta and the core is known as the ridge count.
Ulnar loop vs. Radial loop
The classification of loops is based on the way the loops flow on the hand (not the fingerprint card or developed latent print), so that on the fingerprint card for the left hand, loops flowing toward the thumb impression are ulnar, and loops flowing toward the little finger impression are radial, and the same for the right hand. Of course, the examiner will not know if the fingerprint is an ulnar or radial loop until they have determined from which hand the print was deposited. Until that is determined, the prints are referenced as left-slant or right-slant loops. Many years ago, your author was taught this handy way of remembering ulnar from radial loops by a method called “URL” as follows:

Rods
In the event that the center of the fingerprint has two ending ridges instead of a recurve, these ridges are called rods. The rod that is furthest from the delta is determined to be the core when doing a ridge-count.
Elements of a Loop
Things to remember for the loop pattern:
- Enters from one side and exits (or tends to exit) the same side
- Must have a recurve
- Must have only one delta
- Must have at least one ridge count between the delta and the core
