The suspect had been taken into custody, but there were no witnesses to the crime. During an interview, the suspect stated that he was “attacked” by the victim, resulting in a prolonged fist fight. The suspect stated that the victim was much healthier than him and he feared he was going to lose the fight. He therefore picked up items of convenience that he could use as stabbing weapons in order to “defend” himself. These items were an ink pen and the prongs of an electrical plug. The suspect stated that during the scuffle, he stabbed the victim 116 times, inflicting only minor injuries, at which point the victim told him he did not want to fight any more and he laid down to rest. The suspect stated that when he awoke in the morning, he noticed that the victim must have died during the night. Although the medical examiner determined that the blade length of the weapon that was used far exceeded that of an ink pen or electrical prong, the prosecutor believed that the statement of self-defense would be credible. It took only one photograph, taken by an alert investigator, for your author to determine the statement by the suspect was contrived.
The flow pattern of the blood would suggest that the victim was on his back when the wounds were inflicted. At no point was he standing while being stabbed. If he had been standing, the blood flow would first be vertical and then horizontal after he laid down. A review of the autopsy report also indicated that the left orbital bone of the victim was fractured and there were no defensive injuries. Therefore, the victim was likely incapacitated by a punch prior to the stabbing event. Based on a complete bloodstain pattern analysis report by your author, the suspect accepted a plea agreement for a lengthy prison sentence.
