They consist of an outer casing to create support for the sampling pipe. The sampling pipe itself has screened openings at the bottom, below the water table, to allow water to flow in but to block any sediment. Grouting is often used between the well pipe and the outer casing to create a waterproof barrier that prevents groundwater contamination.
