    Background

    Scientists can evaluate impaired surface waters by performing a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) analysis. A TMDL is the calculated amount of pollutant a water body can receive while still meeting water quality standards. This analysis, paired with restoration plans and projects, can address surface water quality concerns.

    Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL)

    TMDL = Wasteload Allocation + Load Allocation + Margin of Safety

    Where:

    Wasteload Allocation is the total allowable pollutant load from all point sources.

    Load Allocation is the allowable pollutant load from non-point sources and natural sources.

    Margin of Safety accounts for uncertainty in the analysis.

    TMDLs are a tool to support the Clean Water Act's goal of restoring impaired waters to meet water quality standards. The TMDL is approved by both the State of Wisconsin and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
