If you are hoping to save money for yourself or a loved one served by the regional center system by providing this support free-of charge, the business license and insurance won’t be a barrier. However, understanding how the program works and staying current with program developments is still wise.
There is no certificate required for unpaid IFs; however, to ensure a positive experience in the SDP, it is important to keep current with best practices, DDS directives, and regulations. Changes to the program can negatively impact quality of life and continuity of care for people served by this program.
Keeping Up-to-Date with the Self Determination Program
This text is a good source of information, but it is not the only way to develop your understanding of the SDP. Attending support groups, like your regional center’s local advisory committee meetings and funded resources, non-profit organizations programs like SDP Together at Club 21 Learning and Resource Center, the Self Determination Institute’s monthly support and training groups, or Disability Voices United’s roundtables can all help build your foundational knowledge and keep you informed of changes to the program at the state level.
Your regional center may host monthly IF Roundtables, typically on Zoom. They are often attended by regional center staff and working (paid) independent facilitators. These collaborative events can be very helpful to deeply learning about the policies and procedures at one regional center.
There are many ways to keep current with the program. Hopefully you have found multiple options.
Depending on only one Facebook group, one non-profit, or one source for information can be problematic in any situation.. Consider listening to leaders throughout the SDP world and using your excellent critical thinking skills to ask yourself questions like these:
- What is the background of the individual leading the training?
- Am I believing the advice because I want the information to be true?
- What does this trainer gain from the information they are sharing?
- What is the reputation of the organization (regional center, DDS, non-profit, family resource center) I am choosing to listen to?
- How could the information I am hearing impact the sustainability of the program?
- What can I do to help make this program even better for those served?
- How can I verify the information that I learned?
This is just a beginning to the questions we all must ask ourselves when someone is training us. SDP is no different.
