California is a beautifully diverse place with people from all corners of the earth.
To ensure understanding of the Self Determination Program, independent facilitators explain California’s systems to their clients and their circles of support. Doing this will undoubtedly include discussions about ableism and plain language. These explanations may be with individuals whose dominant language is English or one of the many other languages spoken in our state. It is vital to remember that these systems are baffling to English-dominant and English-learning people, alike. Using plain language, checking for understanding often, and comfort with discomfort are all key in communicating clearly.
Cultural understanding matters when looking at disability through different cultural and linguistic lenses. Language shapes how people view disability, and views of disability differ based on culture.
In Communication Professor Tammera Stokes Rice's text, Communications 256: Intercultural Communication , "Chapter 5: Taxonomies of Cultural Patterns" focuses on how various cultural patterns impact how people communicate. One of those patterns, the high-low context cultural taxonomy, was first described in anthropologist Edward Hall's book The Silent Language.
