Consider how you use language to explain ideas about the Self Determination Program. Practice these scenarios using the descriptions above.
- Explain SDP to someone who is new to California from a low-context culture. Assume they understand developmental disabilities in a US context.
- Explain SDP to someone who speaks English as an additional language and has moved to the US from a low-context culture.
- Explain SDP to someone who is learning English from a high-context culture.
- Explain SDP to someone in another language if you have another language in your beautiful brain.
Practice any/all these tasks. Record yourself and make yourself listen to your explanations. (Yes, this can be painful.) Analyze your own explanation. What is missing? What can you do to improve your explanation?
