    What we will learn

    • Suggestions to start being your own IF

Learn everything you can about SDP

For people with disabilities who want to serve as their own independent facilitator, there is nothing specific you need to do, except learn how the program works. Once you know how the program pieces work, you can serve as your own IF. Taft College offers two noncredit SDP certificates for people how want to learn more about how to be a person-centered planner or an independent facilitator.

Attend or join your local volunteer advisory committee.

Consider creating a support group with others who are navigating the same program. Talk to your Local Volunteer Advisory Committee to see if they can help start a group, ask the self advocate committee to spread the word, or start one yourself. You know what you want. Find people who support your vision, and go for it!

You could also do this with a parent or a sibling, instead of completely alone, if you prefer a connected circle of support. That can work, too. Make sure you invite the people you want to include. Also, make sure you hire the people you want working for you. It can be tempting to have a close family member support you, but if you want to grow your independent living skills, it is possible that an outside view might be incredibly helpful.

Deeper thinking about being your own IF

Make a list questions you want to know the answers to before you become your own independent facilitator. Check to see if the trainings you have access to answer those questions.
