A
Accessibility - Making sure everyone, including people with disabilities, can use a place, service, or information.
Accommodations - Changes that help people with disabilities do things more easily, like extra time on a test or ramps for wheelchairs.
Advocacy - Speaking up for yourself or others to get what is needed.
Assistive Technology - Tools that help people with disabilities, like screen readers for people who are blind or speech-to-text software.

Barrier - Something that makes it hard for someone to do what they need to do, like stairs without an elevator.

Coaches - when creating a new position to meet the needs of an SDP participant, the word "coach" can be used to help be more specific about the job performed.

Disability - A physical or mental condition that makes some activities harder for a person.
Discrimination - Treating someone unfairly because of who they are, like not hiring someone because they have a disability.

HIPAA - Health Information Portability and Accountability Act

Inclusion - Making sure everyone can take part in activities, jobs, or education, no matter their abilities.
Independent Facilitator- a person, either paid or unpaid, who helps a Self Determination Program participant figure out what they need to be successful in the program
Independent Living - When a person with a disability makes their own choices and controls their own life.
Individual Education Plan - IEP - legal education agreement to meet needs of students ages 0-22 who qualify for special education services.
Individualized Family Service Plan - In California, regional centers are responsible for Early Start service coordination. These plans are for children with developmental disabilities from birth to age 3. At age 3,
Individual Program Plan - IPP - legal agreement with the regional center to meet the needs of people served ages 3-lifespan.

Jargon - industry specific words used by experts in their fields. Jargon makes it difficult to clearly communicate with people from other language groups or professions. It is like people are speaking different languages.

Paid Internship Program (PIP) - a program that people served by the regional center can use to explore supported employment. This service is held outside of the SDP budget and is not included in the spending plan.
Person-Centered Plan - (PCP) - a plan focused on the strengths, interests, and goals of a person. In the context of the Self Determination Program, the PCP helps a participant show what they want to be doing in their life.
Person-Centered Planner - a person who helps you create a person-centered plan.
Person-Centered Planning - the process of planning in a person-centered way.
Person-Centered Practices - the philosophy and practice of always creating supports and planning with the person served at the center of all possible supports, activities, and plans.
Person-Centered Thinking - using strategies and tools focused on the person at the center to identify creative ways to focus on the individual's desires and strengths.
Privacy - if it is not your story, you do not get to share it. Personal details and private information are never to be shared without a release of information.

Reasonable Accommodation - A change that helps a person with a disability do their job or take part in school or activities without being too difficult for others.
Release of Information (ROI) - A legal document that allows professionals to communicate about a client without them necessarily being a part of the conversation.

Self-Advocacy - Speaking up for yourself and your needs. Typically refers to a person with a disability who advocates for their needs with their message and voice at the forefront. Increasingly, this term is falling out of favor. Advocacy (without "self") works better in most cases.
Service Animal - A trained animal, like a guide dog, that helps a person with a disability do daily tasks.
Spending Plan - the document that shows how funds are going to be used to meet the goals of a participant's SDP plans.

Transition Services - Help for young people with disabilities as they move from school to work or adult life.

Universal Design - Creating places, products, or information so that everyone, including people with disabilities, can use them easily.
Universal Design for Learning - Framework for educators to use to ensure diverse learners have various ways to learn new material and demonstrate their learning.

Workforce Development - Programs that help people learn skills to get jobs and succeed at work.
