While I think the field of criminal justice is important for every citizen in a democracy to understand, I know that many people are interested in this course because they plan to pursue a career in criminal justice. No matter what your field of study is, it is important to begin thinking about your career options in relation to that field. See the career video included in Blackboard with your chapter lecture videos. The World Wide Web has a lot of information about various careers. For instance, you might want to check out www.opm.gov or www.officer.com. Textbooks in your chosen field of study may have more information about careers. You might also wish to communicate with your instructors and ask them about recommended books. You can learn more about a field by job shadowing or talking to people in that field—as you are encouraged to do with your social-awareness activities for this course.
There may be professional associations on your campus, in your community, or even regionally or nationally that you could join. Our regional criminal justice organization is known as the Midwest Criminal Justice Association (MCJA). At the national level, for those interested in theory, we have the American Society of Criminologists (ASC), www.asc41.com. Also at the national level, but with the more applied perspective, we have the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) and the American Correctional Association (ACA). Associations typically offer reduced membership rates for students.
Whenever you find yourself writing a paper for another class or perhaps completing an independent studies project, you could try to focus this work on career concerns in your field. Individuals are also encouraged to obtain an internship or cooperative education field placement before they graduate.
