In parts of this text, we will also examine ethical issues as they relate to the field. In this chapter, we should first think about what “ethics” means. We tend to use the word ethics but often do not fully comprehend what it means.
Definitions
Ethics is a philosophy that examines the principles of right and wrong, good and bad. Trying to make decisions about right and wrong is important but in combination with that we also need morality.
Morality is the actual practice of ethical principles on a regular basis which then would result in living a moral life.
Basically, understanding ethics is only a first step. One needs to take the ethical lessons to heart and then live in accordance with those principles. Hopefully, being an ethical person becomes so ingrained that you make ethical decisions and practice ethical actions on a regular basis. That you live a moral life not just when people are watching but even when they are not. That is a lot to ask of someone but in a field dedicated to the concept of justice—it is expected.
So, in summary—we first need to have the capacity to make value judgments about situations and then secondly we need to practice behavior that is consistent with the ethical principles and value judgments made.
Summum Bonum is the principle of the highest good. It is important to understand that the highest good would not be subordinate to any other.
Put together these three terms explain that we are seeking what is right and then acting on that in order to support the highest good. In criminal justice, the highest good is often Justice. This is why throughout this text and in the class, we are on a expedition to learn about justice.
