In struggling to answer the question posed above, you are probably chained to reach an ethical decision based on the truth of things that you know. Which raises the question—how do we know what we think we know? Typically, there are three main ways through which most Americans determine “the truth” of what they know.
One way that many people reach decisions and evaluate the truth of information is through their religious teachings. For many people God’s truth is THE truth. Decisions about what is right and wrong and how to live your life are based on these religious teachings.
A second way that many people determine the truth is based on the scientific method. The truth becomes pieces of information that can be substantiated with science. If data supports a particular point, than these people are likely to believe it is true.
A third way that many people determine the truth is based on what is known as the sociological method. This method could be thought of as a type of compromise. Individuals that follow this method may fluctuate in that some of their thoughts are governed by religion, but many of their other thoughts are governed by science even if that goes against some religious teachings or stories.
