So in studying criminal justice, it can be difficult to decide what is right versus wrong. It can be difficult to live a moral life as a criminal justice professional because there are temptations and shortcuts all around you. Nevertheless, it is important to continue seeking and reaching for justice which is the summum bonum, or highest goal of our system.
In your expedition to learn about justice, you now need to think about where you feel responsibility for criminal actions lies. Additionally, you need to be introspective and think about the messages you have received in your life that have shaped your view of the world and the “truths” that are in it. As the Greek philosopher said “knowledge is virtue” and the first piece of knowledge is to “know thyself.” We will pick up this discussion of ethics in the next chapter. Once we have talked about this chapter in class and you have watched the lecture videos for this chapter it will be time to test your understanding by going to Blackboard and completing your end of chapter quiz.
