- Identify the various levels of law enforcement and understand the concept of decentralization.
- Discuss differences and similarities among local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Know how well different levels of law enforcement are at dealing with women and minority recruitment.
- Be familiar with the concepts of private policing and community self policing.
- Awareness of other law enforcement agencies such as Tribal and University police forces.
- Be familiar with the concept of private policing.
- Understand the difference between community policing and community-oriented policing.
- Identify the benefits of having a diverse police force.
Now that we have looked at the early forms of policing and several of the early problems and resulting changes in American policing, it is time to take a look at the organization of law enforcement. Understanding law enforcement today can be a big task as there are approximately 18,000 law enforcement agencies employing more than 1.1 million persons on a full-time basis. By looking at how police departments are organized and how varied they are across our country, we can begin to question how we can better quest for justice through improvements or changes to law enforcement.
