Just like many tribal communities, but not all, have law enforcement of their own, many campus communities also have their own campus law enforcement. The majority of the more than 900 US four-year colleges and universities which have 2,500 or more students used their own sworn police officers to provide law enforcement services on campus. The sworn campus law enforcement officers typically have full arrest powers granted by a state or local authority. Two thirds of these campuses with law enforcement have armed officers. Most sworn campus police officers are authorized to use a sidearm, chemical or pepper spray, and a baton. Additionally, most sworn campus officers have both arrest and patrol jurisdictions that extend beyond campus boundaries. Most campus law enforcement agencies have a memoranda of understanding with the other law enforcement agencies, so that their jurisdiction can extend off the campus proper. Most campus is now also have a mass notification system that uses e-mail, text messages, and other methods to alert and instruct students, faculty, and staff in emergency situations.
