The final form of policing to discuss is what is known as community policing. This is when many public citizens band together and form their own type of policing or patrolling force in the community. One of the problems with these groups is that again they do not have training and there was very little screening in terms of who can join. Additionally, increasingly these groups are armed and may be overly aggressive in confronting anyone they are not familiar with. This over-aggressiveness may lead to vigilantism and the citizens themselves may now be breaking the law.

Many public police departments encourage citizens to work with them when forming any type of self group. By working with the public police the individuals can be taught some safety information and primarily they are informed to look out for one another, straighten up their neighborhoods, and call them immediately if they notice something suspicious rather than addressing it themselves. You have probably seen in many neighborhoods, the neighborhood watch signs in the community. These signs show that there is a group of citizens who are working with the police in their community to try to keep their community safe.
