    Police Culture

    Another important aspect to understand about law enforcement is the culture that can develop amongst individuals in the same profession especially when that profession can risk your own life in an attempt to save others. This concept of a police culture is often referred to as a blue curtain or blue line. Symbolically, there is a filter that officers put up that they do not want citizens to see behind. Out on the street they need to be cautious and critical. Amongst other officers they may let their guard down and be humorous and caring. There is often a bonding that takes place between officers based on their job since it entails aspects of honor, loyalty, and individualism.

    The honor is the honor for the type of job, where citizens put their trust in you and you wear a badge. The loyalty is both to your sense of professionalism and the department but also to other officers. Whenever an officer needs backup it does not matter if you know the officer responding all law enforcement officers look out for each other. At the same time that you are part of a group, you also need to be a strong individual. Typically, you are on patrol on your own, you make your discretionary decisions on your own, if necessary you will testify in court on your own, and you deal with the psychological stresses of this job on your own.

    This concept of a police culture is often the why civilians do not put much faith in the testimony of a second officer because they believe that all officers would be willing to lie in order to cover for one another. The individualism of the culture may make the officer withdraw from their family and friends because they cannot share details of ongoing cases and yet it may be those cases that are causing them such stress. Overall, the police culture may encourage people to become cynical and secretive or it may be a source of support.
