Current technology can also help with the administration and management of modern court systems. Computer networks can aid with the rapid retrieval and storage of key legal documents. Electronic recordings can be used as evidence, they can be used help capture the testimony of children in a less formal setting than the courtroom, video technology can be used in the arraignment of individuals currently housed in a jail facility, and some jurisdictions are experimenting with the electronic recording of trial records. Fax technology can also improve the efficiency and speed of document retrieval and sharing such as when a warrant is issued and the officer can retrieve it without leaving the scene.
Alternatives
It is also important to be aware that there are alternatives to the traditional American court system. Some alternatives include things such as dispute resolution and conflict mediation. These types of hearings are usually held in quasi-official settings and both parties agree to follow whatever ruling is decided. This type of alternative is usually used with more minor cases. In the realm of civil law settlement conferences are often used as this allows negotiation between teams of lawyers resulting in an out-of-court settlement. Some jurisdictions are expanding the courts that are offered and are developing specialty courts which focus on one type of criminal act only and often have expanded or evening hours to make best use of the facilities available. Typical specialty courts include gun court, drug court, and domestic violence or family violence court.
