In some misdemeanor cases it may be decided that rather than push a criminal prosecution if the individual agrees to obtaining treatment, or counseling, or participating in an employment program, and so on, the trial may be temporarily postponed. If the individual successfully completes their treatment and the charges are dismissed the individual can avoid the stigma of conviction, this reduces the cost to the system, and it alleviates jail and prison overcrowding. If the individual does not follow through on the agreed treatment program then the trial can resume as soon as it is scheduled.
