Typically, inmates are individuals who have faced the most social obstacles out in broader society. Inmates tend to be young, single, poorly educated, often a minority member, male sentenced for violent crime or drug offenses, and if female in prison for property crimes or drug offenses.
Prison Life
Prison is what is known as a “total institution.” Within the prison you lose your freedom, before long your ties to the outside world, any relationships you had, you have no expectations of privacy and it is very difficult to maintain any dignity. You are under constant scrutiny, there is a myriad of complicated official rules, and you are left with very little decision-making of your-own. You must learn very quickly how to identify friends from enemies, you might want to befriend a particular race and there is often violence along racial lines, and even men need to learn very quickly how to avoid sexual attack which happens to roughly 5% of inmates annually. You might try to get along with the guards but you must not get too friendly or you will raise the ire of fellow inmates and other guards. You need to learn how to hide disappointments or you may face merciless ridicule, and unlike in the outside world where there is never enough time to do everything, in the inside world of the prison you need to learn how to kill time as boredom becomes an enemy.
