The majority of correctional officers are mainly men although most positions are open to women as well. Typically the minimum requirements are a high school education, being an adult at 21 years of age or more, having a relatively clean criminal record and being in good physical health. Some institutions will train on the job whereas others provide one to six weeks of training in advance of actually working at the institution. There typically are opportunities for advancement and supervisory roles. Often correctional officers serve as escorts on medical transport, they may serve on hearing boards or in other bureaucratic positions. The starting salary varies across the nation but is often around $30,000 annually.
