As we wrap up our overview of the criminal justice system, it is important to revisit a few legal aspects as they affect all American citizens. One important concept is the idea of stare decisis—or in Latin, the way that decisions on current cases are made based on what the court said about similar cases in the past. In other words building on a foundation. Understanding this foundation can help us understand how our legal system operates and what our rights are.
