    A. Explanation – What is Curriculum Infusion?

    Curriculum infusion is the process of integrating important related but often neglected content (in this case the Victimology topics of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking - particularly in rural areas) into courses that are regularly offered across the curriculum. Because faculty are typically responsible for the development and delivery of the curriculum, this infusion strategy requires thoughtful participation of ideally all faculty within the department for maximum effectiveness in communicating the information and underlying messages to the students. This faculty-designed infusion module may comprise about a three-week unit of a course, its content may wind thematically through a course, or some of the elements and suggestions from the module may be used as occasional additions to regular course content.

    Curriculum infusion is an essential strategy since violence prevention and awareness issues must be repeatedly brought into classrooms if significant numbers of students are to be reached. Typically, students have respect for faculty in the learning process. Thus, in the classroom faculty have substantial potential for impacting student attitudes and behavior, including attitudes and behaviors toward violence and safety issues (What is Curriculum Infusion, 2002). Involving faculty to bring prevention and awareness into the classroom through curriculum infusion allows a form of campus-wide prevention programming while educating. A successful curriculum infusion program can also provide important benefits to violence prevention personnel who work out of the student affairs side of the university. Faculty referral of students with violence or abuse problems should increase. Faculty and students can become active supporters of domestic violence and sexual assault awareness days, crime victim rights days and other prevention activities taking place on campus and in the community. There is inherent value in involving students as active learners as prevention and awareness are integrated into a course, particularly because we want the students to become engaged with the prevention information presented and apply it to themselves. The classroom can provide opportunities for discussion, research, writing and other assignments that present students with a forum for exploring domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking issues.
