B. History
The idea for the initial curriculum infusion project was developed several years ago by individuals then on the University of North Dakota campus, including such as Bill Bray, Jan Moen, Jim McKenzie, Thomasine Heitkamp, Wendelin Hume, Kay Mendick, and Dick Grosz. With the support of a Department of Justice grant, it was decided to form a consortium called ND WEAV (North Dakotans Working in Education Against Violence). The consortium includes six campuses, corresponding community domestic violence and sexual assault programs, and NDCAWS (North Dakota Council on Abused Women’s Services). The college and community participants include: Jamestown College, Lake Region State College, North Dakota State College of Science, University of North Dakota, Fort Berthold Community College, and Mayville State University, S.A.F.E. Shelter in Jamestown, Safe Alternatives for Abused Families in Devils Lake, Three Rivers Crisis Center in Wahpeton, Community Violence Intervention Center in Grand Forks, Fort Berthold Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center of Fargo-Moorhead.
The aforementioned grant had two primary purposes: First, to place an advocate on campus who would work in collaboration with campus administrators and domestic violence/sexual assault service providers to assist students who have been victims of violence. Second, to develop a campus curriculum infusion program that could be utilized within specific academic disciplines on the coalition campuses. The first pioneering work on the curriculum infusion project was completed by Kathy Coudle-King of the English Department at UND, providing not only an example to follow but containing important information that was incorporated into this module.
