Facts about Domestic Violence in North Dakota
January – December 2016 (NDCAWS 2018)
- 5,218 new victims (new= unduplicated for the year) received services from crisis intervention centers in North Dakota.
- 6,089 incidents of domestic violence were reported to crisis intervention centers in North Dakota.
- At least 3,702 children were directly impacted by these incidents, and 961 orders of protection were filed with the assistance of domestic violence program staff.
- 92% of the victims were women.
- At least 20% of the victims were under the age of 25.
- 14% of the new victims were disabled. Of those disabled, 52% were mentally ill and 38% were physically disabled.
- Weapons were used in at least 14% of the new cases identified.
- Guns were used in 14% of the cases involving weapons and knives were used in 22% of the cases involving weapons.
- Alcohol use by the abuser only was indicated in 33% of the new cases.
- Alcohol use by both victim and offender was indicated in 9% of the cases.
- Domestic violence accounted for 48% of all physical violence cases statewide (BCI).
- 48% of deaths due to homicide from in 2015 were domestic (BCI).
- Deaths due to homicide for those living on Indian reservations in North Dakota were 8 times higher than that of the general population; 48% of these deaths were domestic-related (BCI).

Often students assume that very little criminal activity happens in a rural state and any incidents they knew about were probably isolated and rare. Encourage them to compare their perceptions with the facts as the quiz is corrected.
Facts about Domestic Violence Nationwide
- 1 in 5 teenage girls needs help to break the silence of teenage dating violence (NCVC 2002).
- From one-fifth to one-third of all women will be physically assaulted by a partner or ex-partner during their lifetime (OVC 2002).
- In 1999, 32 %of all female murder victims were killed by their current or former spouses or boyfriends (OVC 2002).
- During 1997, the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) documented 3,327 cases of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered domestic violence victimization.
