Hints for Assisting
Most of us know at least one victim of domestic violence who may turn to us for support or guidance. While there is no magical answer that will solve all of their problems, there are some things we can keep in mind as we try to assist them.
· Believe them, listen to them and focus on their feelings.
· Listening may mean there are times of silence while they gather their thoughts.
· Let them know you understand their feelings and ask how you can help.
· Offer to accompany them in seeking assistance of others.
· Offer shelter and companionship so they do not have to be alone.
It is also important to understand that there are some things which should be avoided. Besides being non-judgmental, the following behaviors should be avoided.
· Do not pry into details but let them share as much as they are comfortable with.
· Do not tell anyone else without permission unless there is an emergency.
· Do not tell them what to do but help them explore options.
· Do not plan retribution on your own and turn to authorities if your safety is an issue.
