Then divide the class up into small groups. Have them research the questions on the Internet during a class period. This assignment will allow students to research in small groups and also affords an opportunity to discuss the validity of certain web sites. During the next class period, students can share the results of their findings with the class. (Useful websites are listed in section J.)
According to the CDC an estimated 15.2% of women and 5.8% of men in the United States have been stalked at some time in their lifetime.
According to the Nation’s Violence Against Women Survey, 77% of female and 64% of male victims knew their stalker.
Over the course of a year, 1,006,970 women, and 370,990 men were stalked.
Based on analysis of the National Violence Against Women Survey results, it is estimated that 8.2 million women have been cyber-stalked at some point in their lifetime.
The average case lasts 1.8 years and nearly one-fifth of all stalking victims move to new locations to escape their stalkers (Tjaden & Thoennes).
Nearly 95%of female victims and 60% of male victims identify their stalker as male.
30% of female stalking victims and 20% of male stalking victims seek psychological counseling as a result of there victimization.
25% of women stalking victims and 10% of men stalking victims obtained restraining orders against their stalkers.
About 24% of female victims who reported their crimes to police had their cases prosecuted as compared to 19% of male victims.
About 92% of the defendants in stalking cases are male. The average age of the defendant is 38 years old.
About 72% of defendants had prior criminal records, the majority being intimate abuse crimes University of Minnesota, Stalking).
"25% of stalking incidents among college women involve cyberstalking" (University of Minnesota, Cyberstalking).
