    Learning Objectives
    • Define ignition temperature, flashpoint, and flame point.
    • Define specific heat and latent heat of vaporization.
    • Explain how temperature and pressure change the state of matter.
    • Demonstrate how temperature and pressure change the state of matter.
    • Demonstrate ignition temperature.
    • Define flammable and combustible materials using scientific properties.

This unit examines fires based on fuels in a liquid state of matter. Liquid fuels require a phase change from liquid to gas in order to undergo the combustion reaction. The temperature, or amount of heat needed to transition these fuels through the phase change varies greatly.

    • 4.1: Liquid Fuels
This page covers key concepts related to liquids, including specific gravity and boiling point. It discusses ignition phenomena like flash and fire points that indicate flammability, as well as the latent heat of vaporization essential for phase changes.
    • 4.2: Summary
This page reviews the fire behavior of liquid fuels.
    • 4.3: Review
This page includes review questions related to course material on liquid fuels and combustion.
