    Live Fire Lab

The Max Fire Box serves as the final lab for this course. This is an opportunity to visually witness many of the concepts discussed in previous units.

    These concepts include:

    • Fire growth stages
    • Heat release rate
    • Flowpath – Unidirectional and bi-directional
    • Neutral plane
    • Rollover
    • Flashover
    • Backdraft
    • Pyrolysis
    • Heat transfer
    • Char
    • Melting
    • Heat release rate
    • Flammability limits
    • Ceiling jet
    • Fire Plume
    • Upper layer development
    • Ventilation

Be sure to review each of these concepts prior to the lab.

You can see some of what the Max Fire Box lab will include by watching this video.

    Thermal Imaging Cameras

During the live fire lab, we will be utilizing numerous thermal imaging cameras (TICs) to enhance learning. TICs display heat rather than light allowing us to see aspects of fire behavior that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye. TICs have limitations and there can be a big difference between different cameras depending on their design. TICs have become increasingly valuable to understanding fire conditions and are now a standard tool utilized during intial sizeup as well as important to rescue and overhaul operations.
