    Mapping to Exam Content Outline

This chapter connects directly to Domain I: Strategic Alignment, which accounts for 25% of the PfMP exam. It covers the core workflow of translating organizational strategy into a defensible, prioritized set of portfolio components: understanding strategic intent, classifying incoming initiatives, inventorying components, applying selection criteria, and modeling scenarios for governance approval. Exam scenarios in this area often test whether you can move from ambiguous strategic language to a structured, criteria-based recommendation rather than relying on intuition or advocacy for a favored initiative.

    • Domain I: Strategic Alignment (25% of exam, 8 tasks): This chapter covers the tasks spanning evaluation of strategic goals and objectives through document review and stakeholder interviews, classification of initiatives into emergent, strategic, or compliance categories, inventorying of existing and potential components, identification and ranking of prioritization criteria, scenario modeling through options and risk analysis, and formulation of governance recommendations grounded in that analysis.
    • Related Knowledge and Skills: Strategic goal analysis, initiative classification, capital budgeting, multi-criteria decision analysis, scenario and what-if modeling, options analysis, SWOT analysis, financial analysis, and governance reporting.

On the PfMP exam, questions in this area often present a scenario where limited capital must be allocated across competing initiatives with different funding rationales, such as mandatory compliance spending versus discretionary growth opportunities. Favor the answer that applies explicit prioritization criteria, transparent to stakeholders and traceable to strategy, over one based on which initiative is most profitable or most urgent in isolation. When a scenario asks for a governance recommendation, the correct response is not simply to select the highest-value option, but to present the rationale, trade-offs, and scenario analysis that allow the governance board to make an informed decision.
